Joint pain is something no one enjoys, and as we age, it often feels like that chronic, dull ache in the joints is just part of the aging process. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. There are ways to manage and alleviate joint pain.
Joint pain can arise from various causes, such as trauma to a specific area of the body (like the knee or elbow), a strain from lifting something heavy, sleeping on a poor mattress, slouching in a chair, or simply having bad posture. Repetitive movements, especially those associated with certain jobs like cashiering, can also worsen joint pain. For example, repetitive motion in the wrist can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
There are over 100 different types of arthritis, and the joint pain it causes affects millions of people. Osteoarthritis, often called "wear and tear" arthritis, is the most common type. It is usually caused by injury, occupation, obesity, or genetics and results in the gradual breakdown of cartilage in the joints.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a more aggressive condition that leads to joint damage and deformity.
Fibromyalgia is another condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, depression, and sleep disturbances. Those suffering from fibromyalgia may also experience tenderness in specific muscle groups.
There are several strategies to help alleviate joint pain. The first step is to listen to your body—pay attention to activities that trigger pain and try to avoid them. Avoid staying in one position for too long, as this can lead to stiffness. When possible, sitting is better than standing for extended periods, as it takes pressure off your hips and knees. If you experience pain in your fingers or hands, try to limit activities that require gripping, twisting, or squeezing with your hands.
For some conditions, using orthopaedic supports may be beneficial. These are available for various parts of the body, including the ankle, arm, elbow, knee, back, and wrist.
Applying heat or ice to the affected joint can also help reduce pain.
Regular stretching exercises can aid in relieving joint pain, as they help maintain flexibility and prevent muscle atrophy around the joint. Mild exercise is also beneficial as it strengthens the muscles surrounding the joint. It’s best to learn these exercises and techniques from a licensed Chiropractor or Osteomyolygist.
